Recognition for Training and Cultural Centre

The Dryden Regional Training and Cultural Centre has been nominatedfor an Ontario Wood Works Award.
The Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in wood-basedconstruction and design.
The Training Centre is up against the Mattawa General Hospital,Sioux Narrows Bridge and the George Jeffrey Children's Centre inThunder Bay.
The winner will be announced November 12th in Toronto.

That was the message conveyed by the Responsible Gambling Councilto Dryden High School students this week.
Program Director Laurie Bell says television and the internet arecreating problem gamblers.
Bell says the 18 to 24 year-old age group is at greatest risk.
One in five High School students believe gambling is a great way tomake money.

Laid off workers looking to go back to school will now have moreoptions to consider.
The Province has expanded its Second Career Retraining Program.
Cathy Emes is an Employment Councilor in Northwestern Ontario andsays for the first time, the program will now cover the costs ofeligible workers wanting to enroll in a short-term program.
She notes the program will also fund short term training such as aheavy-equipment or A-Z truck driver training, something that wasnot available when the program was started earlier this year.
Emes adds the program will also be open to any worker who was laidoff after January 1, 2005 as well as those who may have taken aninterim job since.

Young Drivers of Canada is pleased the McGuinty Government ismoving towards banning the use of hand-held cell phones whiledriving.
Area Spokesperson Maria Bagdonas says the ban will help young andexperienced drivers focus on driving.
The Province's new cell phone legislation will come up for a votein the near future.
Kenora MP says FedNor has Never Been Better

Kenora MP Greg Rickford says FedNor has never been in a betterposition.
The Conservative member says Northern Ontario's economicdevelopment agency remains in the strong and capable hands of TonyClement.
Rickford is also applauding yesterday's Cabinet shuffle.
He says the shuffle provides a great balance of new faces andexperienced leaders.
Rickford says he hopes to learn in the next week what role he willplay in the Minority Conservative Government.
KDSB Introduces Draft Budget

Area Municipalities will be faced with a 1.43% increase in theirlocal share for social services.
The Kenora District Services Board has completed a draft$42-million budget for 2009.
CAO Sten Lif says they are looking for an additional $192,000 inrevenue.
The budget includes money for a new Ambulance Base in Sioux Lookoutand Kenora as well as funding for Social Housing.
The financial document will be voted on November 20th.

All sorts of ghouls and goblins will be hitting the streets tonightand Dryden Police, Bell Canada, the Amateur Radio Club andambulance staff will
be joining them to ensure everyone has a safe Halloween.
A few tips to young trick-or-treaters; wear a light colored costumewith reflective tape, make-up is better then a mask and never goout alone.
Motorists are asked to slow down and use extra caution.
A reminder to Dryden-area residents, the emergency siren will soundat 6 and 8 to signal the start and end of Halloween.

6-NDP members of "Team Northern Ontario" have officially joinedParliament.
The six, including Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP John Rafferty, weresworn in Wednesday.
Rafferty says he's ready to address the number one issue facing theNorth, the economy.
He notes health care and the environment are his other2-priorities.
Rafferty believes the Northern NDP members can work alongsideKenora Conservative MP Greg Rickford to better the lives of localresidents.

Tony Clement will hold on to the portfolio of FedNor.
Clement was moved from Health to Industry Minister in yesterday'sFederal Cabinet shuffle.
However, FedNor was not on the radar yesterday as the economicdevelopment agency for the North was not awarded a lone minister ofstate.
Three ministers of state were appointed for Atlantic, Quebec andWestern Canada.

The Chief Administrative Officer of the Kenora District ServicesBoard says he's anxious to hear details on how the Province plansto reverse the downloading of services onto Municipalities.
The Government plans to make a good news announcement for taxpayerstomorrow.
Sten Lif says the impact of downloading on municipalities has beenquite dramatic.
The province has been looking at reversing the downloading ofservices that was done by the Conservatives in the 1990s

Testing for West Nile in this Region has concluded and it was anunusually quiet summer.
The Northwestern Health Unit says there were no west nile positivebirds, mosquitoes or humans.
Environmental Health Officer Al Mathers says the program will be alittle different in 2009.
The Health Unit won't be accepting dead birds, but will continue tocheck mosquitoe populations to determine the risk of the virus.

The Canadian Automobile Association is pleased the McGuintyGovernment is moving towards banning the use of hand-held cellphones while driving.
Spokesperson Korey Kennedy says CAA members have been raisingsafety concerns about the use of cell phones while driving foryears.
Kennedy says a majority of its members believe distractionassociated with cell phones is greater than with any otherdistraction on the roadway.

Statistics Canada has created another report looking at Ontario'syoung aboriginal population.
The latest study looks at Metis, First Nation and Innuit youthunder the age of 6.
In 2006, 17 percent of off-reserve First Nations children wereliving in families with four or more children, compared to 8percent of Non-Aboriginal children.
The Stats Canada report was designed to provide a picture of theearly development of aboriginal children and the social and livingconditions in which their growing up with.
Trouble in Thunder Bay

About 120 Thunder Bay Sawmill workers are to be laid off for twoweeks next month as the stud plant tries to reduce inventory.
The shutdown at the AbitibiBowater-owned operation will also impactan additional 150 workers who deliver logs to the mill and provideother services.
General manager Luke Drapeau says he is confident the mill willresume operations November 24th and all 120 workers will berecalled.
Though the layoff is attributed to excess inventory, it willcoincide with a similar layoff at AbitibiBowater's Thunder Bay pulpand paper mill.
Meantime, the long-suffering Thunder Bay Fine Papers is now inreceivership.
A receiver is to take possession of the mill and sell it socreditors can get some of the millions of dollars owed to them.
Excess inventory and a lack of customers forced the mill to closein July, less than a year after it reopened.

The Dryden Airport Industrial-Commercial Development Strategy hasbeen presented to City officials.
Council will vote next Monday whether to accept the $1.2-millionexpansion plan.
Consultant Warren Thompson says construction of a new taxiway,paving of a gravel taxiway and construction of new hangars are justsome of the priorities.
Thompson says other suggestions include construction of a combinedservices building for training and storage purposes, upgrades tothe Main Terminal building and an improved water system.
The strategy also calls for industrial lot development, therealignment of Ghost Lake Road and a Satellite Fire Hall.
Thompson says the facility may adopt an Airport Improvement Fee tooffset some of the costs.

It will soon be illegal to feed deer in the City of Dryden.
Council is expected to approve an intentional feeding of wildlifeby-law next Monday.
Chief Building Official Bob Cunningham says there will be someexceptions.
He notes those with natural vegetation and those living in ruralarea's will be exempt from the by-law.
The by-law will require residents to have bird feeders 6-feet aboveground.
Fines will range from $200 to $300.
Cunningham says the deer population in the City is out of control.

The 20-lot Ignace North Business Park is open for business.
The Industrial Lots can be used for a number of purposes includingwarehousing, vehicle and equipment servicing, manufacturing andoffice operations.
In a letter to potential investors, Mayor Lionel Cloutier outlinedthat Ignace is a friendly, full-service community with everythingthat a new business or resident would want to see.
The 1 to 1.39 acre lots range in price from $8,100 to $10,000.
A grand opening ceremony will be held today at 5:15.
FIRE Conference a Success

The recent FIRE Entrepreneurship Conference in Dryden has beendeemed a success.
98% of participants called the 2-day gathering valuable, with 96%expected to attend next year.
Organizers say 23% of those in attendance were operating andlooking to expand.
The 2009 Conference will be held September 30th to October 2nd.
Dowtime at Terrace Bay Mill

Terrace Bay Pulp has become the latest plant to announce down-timedue to depressed market conditions.
About 425 workers at the plant are expected to be laid off for amonth beginning November 9th.
The mill was resurrected by Buchanan Forest Products roughly2-years ago.

Canfield says the goal of website is to help stimulate the localeconomy and boost tourism in Dryden.
Family Health Team Building Open to Public

A special Ceremony was held last Friday to celebrate the opening ofthe new Dryden Area Family Health Team building.
The Team includes physicians, dietitians, nurses and pharmacists.
Director Catherine Campbell says they can now offer a number ofservices under one roof.
The new building has an electronic medical records system whichallows Health professionals to quickly access patient information.
Campbell says they have spent the past 5-years making thetransition to the Family Health Team.
Chief of Police Calling for New Youth Centre

Incidents of youth crime and youth alcohol abuse are on the rise inDryden.
The Police Service has seen days when their lock up has beenoverflowing and officers are forced to work overtime.
Chief Shayne MacKinnon says it will take a community effort toaddress the situation.
MacKinnon believes a new Youth Centre would help turn thingsaround.
He says he's hoping to hold a public meeting next month to discussthe Youth Centre.
MacKinnon adds the City should work with the Federal and ProvincialGovernments to finance the project.
Tuition Arrears Cleared Up

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says it has cleared upmost of the tuition arrears it has with its first nation partners.
Superintendent of Business Dean Carrie says there is only one bandthat hasn't paid its tuition in full this year, but they arecurrently working with them to make sure the debt is paid.
He adds that no students have been kept out of school this yearbecause of unpaid tuition dues.
Last year, a number of students from the Washagamis Bay FirstNation were kept out of school for almost a month because of overdue tuition fees.
Moose Hunters Fined

6-Southern Ontario moose hunters have been fined $1,500 afterpleading guilty to leaving a hunt camp on Crown Land in the DrydenArea.
The men were all hit with a $250 fine, however voluntarily cleanedup the site by removing the wooden building frame, cots, stove,beds, sink, countertop, waterline and all garbage before theircourt date.
The illegal camp was spotted by Conservation Officers near BasketLake Road, outside Dryden.

The Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association plans to meetwith its members in Dryden this week.
Business owners, industry suppliers, and government officials willbe taking part in NOTO's nature and outdoor tourism convention.
Executive Director Doug Reynolds says they'll be looking at new andemerging tourism opportunities, including utilizing internet blogsand networking sites.
Reynolds says the Province has a role to play in creating a touristfriendly atmosphere.
The Assistant Deputy Minister of Tourism will be in attendance andwill provide an update on the tourism competitiveness study.
More People Attending College in our Region

There's more people attending college in Northwestern Ontario.
Confederation College is reporting a 5.5% increase at its Regionalcampuses, with 3,100 new students this year.
Vice-President of Academics Judy Maundrell says there's a lot ofinterest in some specific college programs.
Maundrell attributes part of the increase to recent cuts in theforestry sector.
She says renewed interest in college programming is also helpingboost the numbers.
Titan Resources Announces Work Near Dryden

Titan Resources has announced that work has begun on its goldmining claims in Melgund Township, just outside Dryden.
The first stage of exploration will be the plotting of severallines to verify the exact location of the mineralized zone.
The prospective gold property consists of 40-mining claims coveringjust under 700-hectares.
Titan's property sits adjacent to an old gold mine, which producedgold from 1897 to 1902.
Plant Shutdown in Thunder Bay

Abitibi-Bowater has announced a 2-week shutdown at its Thunder BayMill, impacting 600-workers.
The shutdown will start November 9th.
The Company blames reduced demand for pulp and newsprint andincreased costs.

The recent FIRE Entrepreneurship Conference in Dryden has beendeemed a success.
98% of participants called the 2-day gathering valuable, with 96%expected to attend next year.
Organizers say 23% of those in attendance were operating andlooking to expand.
The 2009 Conference will be held September 30th to October 2nd.
Dowtime at Terrace Bay Mill

Terrace Bay Pulp has become the latest plant to announce down-timedue to depressed market conditions.
About 425 workers at the plant are expected to be laid off for amonth beginning November 9th.
The mill was resurrected by Buchanan Forest Products roughly2-years ago.

A new tool to promote the City of Dryden.
Northern Lights Credit Union has launched mydryden.com, an on-linesite featuring local businesses, attractions, local news andevents.
Manager of Business Development Chad Canfield says its so easy toget your name on the world-wide web.
Businesses can register by filling out a form located at thewebsite.
Canfield says the goal of website is to help stimulate the localeconomy and boost tourism in Dryden.
Family Health Team Building Open to Public

A special Ceremony was held last Friday to celebrate the opening ofthe new Dryden Area Family Health Team building.
The Team includes physicians, dietitians, nurses and pharmacists.
Director Catherine Campbell says they can now offer a number ofservices under one roof.
The new building has an electronic medical records system whichallows Health professionals to quickly access patient information.
Campbell says they have spent the past 5-years making thetransition to the Family Health Team.
Chief of Police Calling for New Youth Centre

Incidents of youth crime and youth alcohol abuse are on the rise inDryden.
The Police Service has seen days when their lock up has beenoverflowing and officers are forced to work overtime.
Chief Shayne MacKinnon says it will take a community effort toaddress the situation.
MacKinnon believes a new Youth Centre would help turn thingsaround.
He says he's hoping to hold a public meeting next month to discussthe Youth Centre.
MacKinnon adds the City should work with the Federal and ProvincialGovernments to finance the project.
Tuition Arrears Cleared Up

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board says it has cleared upmost of the tuition arrears it has with its first nation partners.
Superintendent of Business Dean Carrie says there is only one bandthat hasn't paid its tuition in full this year, but they arecurrently working with them to make sure the debt is paid.
He adds that no students have been kept out of school this yearbecause of unpaid tuition dues.
Last year, a number of students from the Washagamis Bay FirstNation were kept out of school for almost a month because of overdue tuition fees.
Moose Hunters Fined

6-Southern Ontario moose hunters have been fined $1,500 afterpleading guilty to leaving a hunt camp on Crown Land in the DrydenArea.
The men were all hit with a $250 fine, however voluntarily cleanedup the site by removing the wooden building frame, cots, stove,beds, sink, countertop, waterline and all garbage before theircourt date.
The illegal camp was spotted by Conservation Officers near BasketLake Road, outside Dryden.
Free Flu Shot Clinics Start This Week

The Northwestern Health Unit is encouraging everyone to get a flushot this year.
Influenza clinics will be held across the District starting October30th.
Spokesperson Donna Stanley says they want to accommodate everyone'sbusy schedule.

Dryden Home to NOTO Convention This Week

The Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association plans to meetwith its members in Dryden this week.
Business owners, industry suppliers, and government officials willbe taking part in NOTO's nature and outdoor tourism convention.
Executive Director Doug Reynolds says they'll be looking at new andemerging tourism opportunities, including utilizing internet blogsand networking sites.
Reynolds says the Province has a role to play in creating a touristfriendly atmosphere.
The Assistant Deputy Minister of Tourism will be in attendance andwill provide an update on the tourism competitiveness study.
More People Attending College in our Region

There's more people attending college in Northwestern Ontario.
Confederation College is reporting a 5.5% increase at its Regionalcampuses, with 3,100 new students this year.
Vice-President of Academics Judy Maundrell says there's a lot ofinterest in some specific college programs.
Maundrell attributes part of the increase to recent cuts in theforestry sector.
She says renewed interest in college programming is also helpingboost the numbers.
Titan Resources Announces Work Near Dryden

Titan Resources has announced that work has begun on its goldmining claims in Melgund Township, just outside Dryden.
The first stage of exploration will be the plotting of severallines to verify the exact location of the mineralized zone.
The prospective gold property consists of 40-mining claims coveringjust under 700-hectares.
Titan's property sits adjacent to an old gold mine, which producedgold from 1897 to 1902.
Plant Shutdown in Thunder Bay

Abitibi-Bowater has announced a 2-week shutdown at its Thunder BayMill, impacting 600-workers.
The shutdown will start November 9th.
The Company blames reduced demand for pulp and newsprint andincreased costs.
