Lake Helen gets Fur Ball, expanded Market in the Park

It will come to Lake Helen 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8: a big FurBall, at the Ann Stevens House at 201 E. Kicklighter Road.
Yes, the event will honor not only the cats in Lake Helen, "Cuzthere are so many of them," Lake Helen Friends of the Libraryofficer Connie Hughes said, but will help the library, too.
The library group will split the proceeds with Lake Helen AnimalControl. Officer Patrick Clarino has wanted to start a spay/neuterprogram in Lake Helen, and the Friends of the Library want to help seed the program.
"Sadly, lots of people seem to dump cats in lovely, rural LakeHelen and our sister city of Cassadaga," Friends of the Libraryofficer and Fur Ball co-coordinator Norma Blackman said.
Everyone's invited to come in costume. The $20 ticket covers abuffet and live music by Tammy Johns, a rhythm and blues musicianwho now lives in Lake Helen, but "was in Detroit a long time,"Hughes said. There will be a cash bar.
The ticket comes in the form of a mask, to help everyone get intothe spirit of the thing.
The Fur Ball will offer a "Cat-O-Log" silent auction. Items will bemostly cat-themed, including ceramic and garden statues, books,gift baskets, a romantic dinner for two, and more.
Dale Winslow, a pottery and ceramics artist at Clay Pigeons potterystore in DeLand, is donating art, as are a couple of students.
A painting by Bonnie Muir, daughter of part-time Lake Helenresidents Joanne and Jim Muir, was snatched up before it got to theauction, but proceeds will benefit the cause. Bonnie Muir is aTeacher of the Year for 2008 in Massachusetts.
Tickets can be purchased at the Ann Stevens House , the Lake Helen Country Store at 360 S. Lakeview Drive, theCassadaga Camp Book Store at 1112 Stevens St. in Cassadaga, Grrsand Purrs at 116 N. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand, or Clay Pigeonspottery shop, at 120 S. Woodland Blvd. No. C in DeLand.

Market in the Park a regular thing
Something else is starting in Lake Helen to help fund cityprograms. The Lake Helen Market in the Park is now open forbusiness 7 a.m.-noon every Saturday at 493 S. Lakeview Drive, notjust one Saturday a month. Police Chief Keith Chester got an OKfrom the City Commission for the additional days.
Vendors will be charged $8 for a 15-foot-by-15-foot stall. Proceedswill help fund Lake Helen recreational programs.
