The XVI Iberoamericana Craft fair opens to the public on October 31- November 9 at the International Centre for Fairs and Congressesin Santa Cruz .
This year 17 Uruguayan artisans representing their country willtake part, where a special area has been reserved for thoseartisans who deal in textiles. Uruguayan crafts represented willbe from the most traditional textile; wool, which is woven on atraditional loom to bovine fur production passing through wood,metal or ceramic objects, as well as saddlers, sculptors; specialists in matt engravings, jewellery and paper.
The Consejero Insular of Economic Development, Commerce and Employment, EfraínMedina, declared that the Uruguayan artisans exhibiting theirproducts " have passed a very rigorous selective process that has allowed usto count on a very diverse group of specialists, some evenrecognized on an international level by various awards, whopractice different techniques and professions." He continued“…that Uruguayan representatives also include othercomplementary activities such as a ‘Uruguayan gastronomic week’, a meeting between Canary and Uruguayan businessmen, as well as other cultural activities that will serveto guarantee the ties of cooperation that already unite both ourterritories ".
There will be more than 300 exhibitors, including artisans fromPortugal, the Canary Islands and the rest of the autonomous Spanishregions all focusing on American crafts from all over Spain , each authentic masters of their trade, representing openwork,embroidery, rosettes, knitting, fabric decorations; specialists inlinen, wool or silk, ceramicists, jewellers, wood, fibre or leatherspecialists, to mention but a few of the crafts on show. There willbe live workshops, musical activities and various cultural events,and for the first time, artisans from the Tenerife Carnival willhave the opportunity to exhibit some of their fantastic creationsdemonstrating the complexity of their craft.
This fair has been held in Tenerife since 1989, and has become oneof the most popular public events of the year, with a vast intakeof visitors who come not only to see the great variety of diversetechniques exhibited by these talented craftsmen, but to buyquality hand-made Reyes and Christmas presents at very competitiveprices.
