Like a Virgin

When we think of cosmetic surgery I imagine that we generally thinkof face lifts, liposuction or boob jobs. However, there is a newlygrowing demand for a far more intimate piece of surgery that isstill regarded by some as cosmetic but, by others, as a matter oflife or death.

This particular piece of surgery is focussed on a very small pieceof membrane, can be per formed under local anaesthetic, takes onlyabout half an hour to complete and can cost as little as US$500depending on which country you are in. However, in a number ofcountries the procedure is regarded as highly illegal and doctorswho undertake such delicate surgery have received death threatsfrom those who oppose the operation.

And, no, this has nothing to do with the argument of the pro-lifersand it is not about abortion, FGM, or anything to do with religion.In much of the world this has everything to do with culturalpractice and honour amongst families, although, perhaps typically,in some other parts of the world the procedure is to do withvanity, misplaced self-perception or misguided male notions offemininity.

In America the operation to restore the hymen, called ahymenoplasty or hymenorraphy, is commonly done by affluent womenwho wish to restore their virginity as a treat for their husbands.It is frequently done as part of a vow- newing ceremony or justbefore a second honeymoon trip and enables the wife to give herhusband the gift of her virginity, or to mark the losing of hervirginity to someone special in her life as opposed to the boy nextdoor twenty five years ago in a back seat fumble in his dads caron a one-night stand! Apparently, a recreational hymenoplasty isnow becoming so popular in New York that prices for the operationhave plummeted over the last year or two.

However, the majority of these procedures are done by desperatewomen for far more important reasons which can actually lead tolife or death situations. Women who undergo the procedure oftengive false names and addresses for fear that someone will findabout what they are doing and the fear is very real. The reason forthis anxiety is that when a woman marries in certain cultures it isassumed that she will be pure and virginal. To be a true virginyou must be in possession of an intact hymen which will ruptureand bleed on the wedding night and demonstrate to the world, or theawaiting mother-in law, that the husband is the only man to knowhis newly wedded wife If the new bride cannot offer a robust hymento be ruptured on the wedding night, or if she does not bleed, thenher honour is at stake and, in xtreme cases, she is likely to bethe victim of violence or an honour killing carried out
either by the grooms family or by her own father or brothers towhom she has brought shame. This is also the reason why doctors whocarry out the procedure do not advertise their skills. In thesesocieties, a doctor who aids and abets women in repairing a brokenhymen is often the target for death threats from men who feel thatthey are being deceived into marrying used goods.

Unfortunately, in many cultures, men associate the notion ofvirginity with a womans ability to be a good wife and mother. Itis up to the woman to prove her worth by demonstrating that she isa virgin on her wedding night. If she is unable to do this sherisks being labeled a whore. However, hymens can be broken ordamaged by any number of activities undertaken through childhoodand early adulthood. Strenuous exercise, bicycle or horse-riding,bumps and falls, and the use of tampons can all rupture the hymenwithout anyone knowing. In fact, as few as 57% of women will havean undamaged hymen on marriage despite never having engaged in anysexual activity. And not all women will bleed the first time theyhave intercourse. Research by a British gynaecologist has shownthat more than half of the women interviewed
failed to bleed during their first experience of penetration and anumber of others could not remember.

Some doctors fear that the operation to restore hymens is abackward step and egard it as way for men to continue controllingwomen. They would much prefer open discussion and an end to thecontinuing focus on womens purity.

However, cultural practices are deeply embedded into communitiesand it will take
far more than an open and frank discussion of womens sexual rightsto modify ingrained male social attitudes. And let us not forgetthat even Princess Diana had to undergo a virginity test beforeshe was allowed to marry Prince Charles!

Spending a Penny or Saving it?

Now I am not funny about going to the toilet when I need to emptymy bladder at the office. This is because when I walk into a toiletat work, people generally know what I am doing so I get on with it.But there are people out there who like to pretend that they are ina toilet to do something other than spend a penny or have a pee.These are the people who go into a cubicle and, on realising theyhave company and that there is someone next door, hesitate in theirintentions as they dont want you to know what they are doing. NowI am of the opinion that we all pee and, whether male or female,when our stream hits the toilet bowl it might make a noise akin,surprisingly, to water falling on water. And theres nothingspecial about that is there? But these weirdo people then attemptto disguise what they are doing by coughing loudly or making weirdsounds with the toilet paper dispenser or by actually flushing thetoilet (and wasting all that water) before they have actually doneanything that requires flushing. So what is their problem? Ithought this was just a Thai thing and to do with their odd Asiancultural sensitivities, but then my mum (bless her shes eighty onenext month) actually admitted that she wouldnt go if there wassomeone else nearby who might be listening and she assumed thateverybody was like her so that hour on hour there are millions ofpeople around the world in public conveniences who are all waitingfor the person in the next cubicle to go away before releasingtheir bladder sphincters in order to void their bladders. And ifyou are waiting for the person next to you to leave, and they arewaiting for you to leave, wont that result in hours of wasted worktime or even death from starvation or at the very least kidneycomplications that result from a spend a penny standoff in whichboth protagonists pretend that they are not really there whilstwaiting for the other to bugger off? So if you are one of theseweirdoes and are anal about your bladder habits just stop being sosilly; dont be ashamed to let rip and splash away against that olenamel the louder the better, the wetter the splatter!!
