Screen printing can be utilized on different mediums ofsubstances like paper, paper board, and numerousother substances like plastics, glass, nylon and even cotton.
The main merit which makes screen printing stand apart from rest ofthe other printing process methods is that it can print ondifferent surfaces of any shape, size. Another important meritencompassed in the screen printing is that a thicker ink can beused than the other printing techniques. This feature facilitatessome of the very interesting designs which are not practicable inother forms of the printing. The application process of thetechnique is so simple that it facilitates a wider usage of inksand dyes for its usage in screen printing than the other printingpress usage options.
With the utilization of the screen printing, the production rateshave improved this also implies that screen printing is a quickprocess too and it is more flexible. This is an outcome of thedevelopment of the rotary printing press, better inventions ofdryers, and U.V curable ink. The chemicals which are utilized inthe screen printing process are the screen emulsions, inks, andsolvents, surfactants, caustics and oxidizers used in screenreclamation.
Types of screen printing presses
Screen printing presses are of three main kinds viz:
" The flat bed
" Cylinder
" Rotary
Flat bed and cylinder presses
Flat bed is one of the most widely used types of screen printing. The flat bed and the cylinder press have the same features that arethey both use flat screens as well as a three step reciprocatingprocess of performing the printing operation. The screen is movedonto the substrate, then the squeegee is pressed on the mesh andtaken over the image area, and finally the screen is taken awayfrom the substrate thus ensuring the completion of the process.Using the flat-bed press the thing to be printed is placed on ahorizontal print bed parallel to the screen. Incase of the cylinderpress the thing to be printed is placed on the cylinder.
Rotary screen presses
These presses are developed to facilitate a continuous, high speedweb printing. The screens in these presses are very thin metalcylinders. The cylinders are open ended and they are covered atboth the ends and these covers are fitted in blocks in the side ofthe press. In the course of printing the ink is pumped into throughone end of the cylinder so that there is continuous inflow of theink. The squeegee is a continuous free floating bar inside thecylinder. The pressure of the squeegee is maintained by the magnetbars which are placed under the press bed. These are most oftenused for printing textiles, wallpapers and other substances whichrequire unbroken continuous patterns.
