A couch is not a couch without Özbek's design pillows

Pillows with silk embroidery, handicraft, printing, weaving models, Scandinavian designs, Anatolian and Brazilian florals, English interior-stripes, Ottoman silks and African patterns are ready for decorating the house. World-famous Turkish designer Rfat Özbek opens a shop full of designer pilllows in Istanbul's Teşvikiye district after Bodrum.

As a designer who is sophisticated, determined and calm, Rfat Özbek has more stories than any Turkish designer to tell about his success in the world of fashion. Today, Özbek designs cushions that bring fluffiness and comfort to every homethey are a luxury, a reminder of a journey, a memory or a dream.

After he finished high school in Istanbul, Özbek went to London to study architecture. I liked the designing part of architecture, he said, but not the calculation part. He always had an interest in fashion, and with the help of his friends in London he stepped into the fashion world. Özbek does not swagger, he actually prefers to stay quiet, but his designs tell of his triumphant and sensational life.

Özbek may be more than a designer now, who found peace in himself, or peace in the pillows after his intense work in the fashion business. He founded Yastk, which means cushion in Turkish, with his colleague Erdal Karaman.

Özbek, 55, was one of the leading names in the world fashion for 25 years until he quit in 2000. He quit not because he was bored of the tough business world, or because he could not design anymore, but because he wanted to. He also admits that he was repeating his designs. Özbek is a designer who is inspired by world cultures, and he thought he had seen many cultures that inspired him, so he needed to take a break and see if he wanted to continue designing.

He said that he did not have the chance to work with Turkish fashion brands because he was so busy expanding his own label, which he founded in 1984. He made a name for himself as one of the most successful fashion designers of the world within two years, and in 1988 and 1993 he was named Designer of the Year in England. Özbek worked with the Italians and the French, noting, That's how the fashion world heard about me. The biggest advantage in working abroad is that it is easier to introduce yourself to the fashion world. A person has more chances.

Lady Di, Madonna, Uma Thurman, Janet Jackson, Cher and Kylie Minogue are among the celebrities for whom he has designed clothes. But then suddenly Özbek decided to move to Bodrum to design his own life.

He bought a house in the restort town on the Mediterranean coast and designed it the way he wanted to, but there was one thing missingpillows. He looked for matching pillows to his furniture, but he could not find even one. That was when he decided to open Yastk. The pillows I saw in the shops were jazzed up, flossy and not filled with plume, Özbek said.

Özbek collected many clothesfrom around the world; in any place he visited he bought clothes because that was part of his job. With all those clothes he now designs pillows. He opened his first store in Bodrum because that is where he lives, but after all the demand he opened a second Yastk in Istanbul's Teşvikiye district.

In Bodrum we only have the chance to sell the pillows in one season, but in Istanbul Yastk can serve its clients over the whole year, stated Özbek.

At his shop in Bodrum's Yalkavak neighborhood he designs pillows appropriate for summerhouses, especially for Bodrum houses, which are famous for their design and architecture. On the other hand, at his shop in Istanbul he offers designs more suitable for winter houses.

There are pillows with silk embroidery, handicraft, printing, weaving models, Scandinavian designs, Anatolian and Brazilian florals, English interior-stripes, Ottoman silks, African patterns, vintage Özbek weaves and prints that have inspired an eclectic and sumptuous mix of colors and textures.

It is a bit complicated, there are designs both for the city and the village, said Özbek, and with his words he was actually defining Istanbul: A little bit of city, a little bit of village.

He said that he had many clothes that he kept in his apartment. I am sure that many Turkish houses have unused pillowcases. The pillows tell a lot about the atmosphere in the house, they give a novel touch to the place, emphasized Özbek, whose cushions most of the time are limited editions. The designs made by a unique cloth are more expensive than the other ones.

There are also small pillows, filled with lavender, which are handmade with needle laces.

Özbek, who left home at the age of 16, is now traveling back and forth between Turkey and England, which he calls his second home. Özbek is planning to open jewelry and furniture stores in the coming years, in addition to opening more Yastk shops in other districts.
