Dress outdoor dining tables in colorful acrylic wares

Form may follow function, but it doesn't mean practical has to be plain.

Case in point - acrylic and melamine dinnerware. It's big this time of year as people are looking to jazz up their outdoor dining and entertaining.

"They work in so many ways outdoors," said Phil Tracey, a decorating expert for HomeGoods stores. Since they don't break, he said, acrylic and melamine are ideal for kids because there won't be broken dishes or glassware where there are bare feet.

Acrylic outdoor dinnerware also gives people a chance to be more daring in their style choices than they would be for their indoor dinnerware.

Summertime in the back yard is about fun, so the trend is toward bright, cheerful colors and whimsical patterns.

While acrylic and melamine dinnerware can be relatively inexpensive (starting around $20 for a four-place-setting set at discount department stores such as Target), they're also going higher end as Martha Stewart is introducing pieces in her product line for Macy's.

You can find just about any look to suit you and your outdoor setting. Don't be afraid to mix it up, Tracey advised. In fact, matching is out. Think coordinating your dinnerware with your setting. What does your outdoor furniture look like? Is the material metal, wood or wicker? What color and/or pattern is the cushion or sling? That can help you choose your dinnerware.

Have more of a garden setting? Go with pastels and accent florals. Looking for the relaxed party vibe of tropical and tiki? Check out the Palm dinnerware collection ($3.99-$12.99) at Linens 'n Things. Looking for something more aquatic to go with your new pool? Try the Summer Living collection ($2.25-$20) at Kohl's.

If you buy a set of solid plates, you can mix a variety of patterns with them. Tracey loves seafoam green because it goes with both blues and greens and is a hot color right now. Stripes can work with dot, floral or leaf patterns if the colors coordinate.

Some melamine is also more earth-friendly, as it is made from recycled materials. And using acrylic and melamine dishes instead of paper plates means less trash going to the dump. Also, buying the dishes just once saves you money in the long run, Tracey said, because you don't have to buy replacements, and you don't burn gas driving to the store to get them.
