A textile is a flexible material comprised of a network of naturalor artificial fibres often referred to as thread or yarn. Yarn isproduced by spinning raw wool fibres, linen, cotton, or othermaterial on a spinning wheel to produce long strands known as yarn.Textiles are formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, orpressing fibres together (felt). The production of textiles is animportant craft, whose speed and scale of production has beenaltered almost beyond recognition by industrialization and theintroduction of modern manufacturing techniques. However, for themain types of textiles, plain weave, twill or satin weave, there islittle difference between the ancient and modern methods.

Textiles have an assortment of uses, the most common of which arefor clothing and containers such as bags and baskets. In thehousehold, they are used in carpeting, upholstered furnishings, window shades, towels, covering for tables, beds, and other flatsurfaces, and in art. In the workplace, they are used in industrialand scientific processes such as filtering. Miscellaneous usesinclude flags, backpacks, tents, nets, cleaning devices, such ashandkerchiefs; transportation devices such as balloons, kites, sails, and parachutes; strengthening in composite materials such asfibre glass and industrial geotextiles, and smaller cloths are usedin washing by "soaping up" the cloth and washing with it ratherthan using just soap.
Textiles used for industrial purposes, and chosen forcharacteristics other than their appearance, are commonly referredto as technical textiles. Technical textiles include textilestructures for automotive applications, medical textiles (e.g.implants), geotextiles (reinforcement of embankments), agrotextiles(textiles for crop protection), protective clothing (e.g. againstheat and radiation for fire fighter clothing, against molten metalsfor welders, stab protection, and bullet proof vests.
In all these applications stringent performance requirements mustbe met. Woven of threads coated with zinc oxide Nan wires, laboratory fabric has been shown capable of "self-poweringnanosystems" using vibrations created by everyday actions like windor body movements.[2][3] Textiles are made in various strengths anddegrees of durability, from the finest gossamer to the sturdiestcanvas. The relative thickness of fibres in cloth is measured indeniers. Microfibre refers to fibres made of strands thinner thanone denier.
