300 of the workers live here, and if they have to move, it'll beeven more difficult for the city."
Some displaced employees found jobs in Tremonton.
People are scrambling to find new jobs. The Malt-O-Meal cerealplant hired some. The West Liberty Foods meat processing facilityis expected to double its 250-member work force in the next fewmonths. And Proctor & Gamble, which will add about 500 jobs by 2010when its plant is completed, has already sent out a manager whorecently closed on a new home.
But others may be forced to look farther afield for work. During aMay job fair, many soon-to-be-unemployed workers met with employersfrom as far away as Twin Falls, Idaho.
Plant supervisor Ron Yeates may be among those moving. He beganworking for La-Z-Boy 27 years ago, weeks after graduating from BearRiver High School. But without that job, he is using his retirementsavings to buy a diner in Ogden, taking advantage of his experienceworking intermittently at a Tremonton restaurant.
Terry and Yvonne Vincent, who both worked at La-Z-Boy, are takingretraining classes. A 21-year plant veteran, Terry is looking tobecome a machinist or build cabinets. Yvonne, who worked at theplant for 15 years, is enrolling in skin-care classes to expand herpart-time massage-therapy business.
"With gas prices so high, our biggest concern is getting to andfrom classes," said Yvonne. "We heard there might be some help forthat, but we don't know if we'd even be eligible. You have to bewilling to search where you can get help."
Glenn Brandt, a 20-year plant veteran, has a session scheduled witha job counselor, but hopes he can build his music career. He playsguitar for city festivals and cut his first CD last year.
"I came here with $800 and a vehicle half paid for, and I made it,"he said. "I can do it again."
