There are certain staples of any solid Batman diet: cape andcowl, batmobile, Alfred, insane villain… and, of course,bat-gadgets. And lots of them. For what good is Batman without histrusty utility belt and the many, many enthralling pieces of techcontained therein?

So with The Dark Knight opening this week, IGN Gear decided to take an inventory of thevarious bat-gadgets that have appeared in the live-action Batmanfilms over the years. But a quick note before you get startedbelow: We chose to not include bat-vehicles on this list sincethose remarkable machines aren't really gadgets -- look for aseparate story about them on Gear sometime in the near future. (Andadditionally, we've also decided not to include Robin or othersidekick gadgets here because, really, who needs to be reminded of Batman & Robin more than is absolutely necessary?) But if it's something thatfits in the Caped Crusader's belt, in his boot, or otherwise on hisperson, then it's on this list. And it's probably a prettywonderful toy…

Utility Belt

Batman and his utility belt go together like America and apple pie, which is why it's always been kind of disappointing that, asidefrom the old 1960s Adam West Batman, most of his live-action beltshaven't seemed very utilitarian at all. They often feel designed more for their cosmetic appealthan their functionality -- which of course they were by someHollywood costume designer -- as with the belts seen in Tim Burtonand Joel Schumacher's Batman films, which seemed to be all beltbuckle and little else.
