Composting material winds up in tip

Parliamentary greenies who diligently separate out their organicwaste have had the wool pulled over their eyes for more than ayear, Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says.
While the Government attempts to set world standards in climatechange legislation, environmentally-minded Ministers andparliamentary staff have been labouring under the impression theirorganic waste was being composted, when in fact it is sent to thelandfill with other general rubbish.
"To pretend to offer composting but then to throw it in thelandfill is pure greenwash," Ms Fitzsimons said.
"Unless Parliament can get its own house in order on simple thingslike composting waste, reducing consumption and offsetting flights,then the task of leading the country to a sustainable future willbe exposed as hypocritical."
Ms Fitzsimons said the Green Party had passed on the name of acompany that collects and composts organic waste to theParliamentary Services, and a pilot scheme was due to start inJuly.
