Review: Emperor's New Kilt at National Theatre of Scotland

[2008-5-20]

Tag: Coat Fabric

PLEASE, please, do not dismiss The Emperor’s New Kilt – a co-production between Wee Stories and the National Theatre of Scotland – as a show for children.

Instead, look upon this tartan take on the Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fable as a must-see for all ages.

The production is currently on tour, coming to Dundee Rep for just three days from May 28-31.

It offers a wonderfully colourful, entertaining and hilarious trip to the theatre, and is a production of the very highest quality, thanks in part to Perth’s Becky Minto whose design created entirely from cloth is truly a cut above.

The exploits of The Emperor’s New Kilt is told through the eyes of three young siblings living in urban Scotland who head for a holiday in the country’s wide open spaces.

Their imagination takes them to the Land of Kiltie, where its vain, tyrannical Laird has one true love, his kilts. In the lead-up to the most important day in the Kiltie calendar – his birthday – the Laird wants for one thing, a new kilt ‘the likes of which has never been seen’. Enter Mr Harris and Mr Tweed, two dodgy tailors, who give this gullible customer exactly what he asks for.

The story moves along apace, interwoven with elements of Scottish music hall, pantomime and ceilidh – and an abundance of colourful characters, human and animal!

The writers and directors, Andy Cannon and Iain Johnstone, are also among the hard-working five-strong cast, whose characters include Big Jessie, Mr and Mrs McMutton, the scaredy eagle and poor old Ramsay the Ram who’s destined to be made into the Laird’s birthday haggis.

Some material form of accolade must end up in Becky Minto’s hands. PA Arts of April 8 told how Becky had entered into the spirit of a show about clothes and fabrics, by designing the set of enormous cloth backcloths which were cut and stitched, much of it by hand, by the Liverpool lass and her team over the winter months in a bleak warehouse at Scone Airport.

Different types of fabric create different textures for the sky, sea, mountains, grass, houses and the laird’s castle, inspirational use of coat hangers maintain the drapery thread, and we see sporrans and the humble tartan travel tartan rug as they have never been seen before.

As the brothers and sister come to an end of their oh-so-entertaining adventures, the audience can reflect on the deeper messages which run through the fun and frolics – and cook up that recipe for vegetarian haggis!
