So when will we know whether Penn State is for real?
Not Saturday, that's for sure, when the 16th-ranked Nittany Lionsare expected to beat up on Temple (1-2). And not yet, consideringtheir nonconference schedule so far: Coastal Carolina, Oregon State(a victory that looks less impressive now) and Syracuse.
Penn State has been criticized for its soft nonconferencescheduling (sound familiar?). But give the Nittany Lions credit fortrying. Oregon State and Syracuse looked like decent games a monthago. When Penn State put Syracuse on its schedule back in 2002 fora two-year, two-game run, it looked like ambitious scheduling.Still, many in football-crazy Pennsylvania want Penn State to playPittsburgh every year.
"We need seven home games for financial reasons," PennState coach Joe Paterno said. "And it's tough to do if you've got to play home andhome with everybody."
The contract with Temple, for example, has the Owls playing twiceat Penn State in return for one home game. But Paterno won't letfolks forget that it was Pittsburgh that helped shoot downPaterno's dream of an eastern all-sports conference decades ago. Quarterback shuffle
As many expected, Ohio State used freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor extensively against Southern Cal.
Coach Jim Tressel alternated Pryor with Todd Boeckman often, sometimes on an every-other-play basis. Pryor played ineight of 68 offensive snaps in the previous week's game againstOhio but was in for 25 of 64 snaps against USC.
Pryor's running ability was evident from the start. The questionwill be his ability in the passing game as a freshman.
"We discussed it early in the week that maybe the thing to dowasn't go by the series," Tressel told the Cleveland PlainDealer. "This way, you're able to talk to both of them inbetween the time they were in there." Step it up
