That was about the same time that Chrysler returned to SA withVoyager as one of pillars it built its resurgence on and today, theVoyager is just as prominent in South African family getawayparking lots as it is in the 'States.
Now Chrysler SA has just launched its third generation of itsfamily favourite in the all-new Chrysler Grand Voyager, whichpromises to raise the bar in the most competitive MPV segment.Boasting an all-new cabin and exterior design and over 30 new orimproved features, the latest Chrysler also has a new six-speedautomatic transmission in either 3.8-litre V6 petrol and the 2.8litre turbo diesel engines
Grand Voyager also features the likes of Swivel 'n Go second-rowseats that rotate 180 degrees to face the third row, and aremovable table that installs between the two rows, covered storagebins in the floor of the second row, third-row uncovered storageand fold-in-the-floor third-row seating.

Heated first and second-row leather or cloth seats; rear-viewinterior conversation mirror; YES Essentials stain-resistant,odour-resistant, anti-static cloth fabric (on LX versions); aremovable flashlight in the rear quarter panel; first andsecond-row power windows; second and third-row retractable sunshades; power sliding doors; power liftgate with power button onthe key fob and rear pillar; ambient halo lighting; movable,pinpoint LED reading lamps; map lights and a tri-zone heating andcooling system are all Grand Voyager features.
The new Grand Voyager looks great too; gone is that old jellybeanshape and in its place is a clean, tailored line with betteraerodynamics and a solid stance thanks to the many design cues itshares with the Chrysler 300C.
Aerodynamic improvements and enhanced structural body stiffnesshave reduced noise, vibration and harshness and enhanced interiorquietness, while a new twist-beam rear axle with coil springs andnew front-wheel-drive suspension architecture provide improvedstability and ride comfort, and prevent road noise and transmissionharshness from entering the passenger compartment.
Grand Voyager offers a choice of two modern engines: a 3.8 litre V6producing 147kW at 5 200 rpm and 312Nm of torque at 4 000rpmin anda 2.8l turbodiesel producing 120kW at 3 800rpm and 360Nm of torqueat 1800rpm.
The engines in the new Grand Voyager are mated to a new six-speedautomatic transmission for a brisker launch and smaller stepsbetween ratios and thus, smoother operation.
Our time with Grand Voyager on its Knysna launch left me impressedbefore I even drove the car  Chrysler asked a few young mums tointroduce us to the newcomer and they had absolutely no problem inhappily demonstrating the big people carrier's supreme and soeasily achieved versatility. A really cool touch is the ability tofold the rearmost seats down backwards to create a neat grandstandbench looking out of the tailgate.
The other trick is just how cavernous the vehicle is with all thoseseats folded down into the floor. True versatility.
On the road, its still very much a Chrysler Voyager, but just muchbetter. A more pleasant ride, more harmonious gearbox and thatsilky big six or four-pot turbodiesel make for an effortless drive,while all the tangibles of such better quality than what we onceexpected from Chrysler.
