Creating opportunities
After the formalities and air kisses were done with it was down tothe business of fashion. The Sandton Convention Centre was arrangedto accommodate 120 booths selling accessories, shoes and garmentsstraight off the catwalk. So if you saw something on the ramp, youcould head to the designers stand and simply pick your size –how convenient!
This added platform gave the designers an opportunity not only tomake sales but also to network and provide information on theirstockists and future plans.
This year the partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture(DAC) ensured that more 900 crafters from across the country got towork with various designers to fuse our countrys rich hand craftheritage with edgy contemporary design.
Highlights
Clive Rundle Clive used mens vintage suit material to create variousfeminine garments such as corsets and halter neck dresses.Brilliant structure and form, further highlighting that a show inParis is long over due.
Mantsho – For her fifth appearance at SSAFW, Palesa Mokubung took agiant leap and created her own fabric. Bold prints of her logo (herdistinct face) and flowers appear on the textile design. The 20garment collection ranged from full length dresses to tailoredskirts and bosom-accentuating waistcoats.
Lunar – This label uses only natural fabrics and is dedicated tosustainable and environmentally friendly fashion. Inspired bylandscapes, colours are neutral and reminiscent of watercolourpaintings.
Kluk CGDT The two lads got the audience excited with their interactiveintro and sing-along soundtrack. While everyone was staring to thefront of the ramp, waiting for the action, the first model appearedfrom the opposite end forcing everyone to shift their curiousheads. The pieces made me think of Alice in Wonderland – witha sexy edge. Large floral prints and layered colourful dresses madeout of silk, organza and taffeta.Beautiful.
Celebrity power or real talent?
Socialite Uyanda Mbuli has been threatening to pick up a needle andthread for a while now. The savvy businesswoman doesnt bat aneyelid when an opportunity presents itself; she spotted thetalented Gert Johan Coetzee and partnered with him to create Diamond Face Couture. The cute-faced and humble couturier is definitely the one with theexperience and talent but Uyanda brings the marketing and brandingexpertise that's got everyone from Miss SA to musician Lira wearingtheir clothes.
Another celebrity-turned-designer is the always-in-large-sunglassesNhlanhla Nciza, best known for her soothing vocals as part of afropop group Mafikizolo. Her range aimed to celebrate the diversity ofAfrica with a touch of vintage. Both Diamond face and NN Vintage shows were packed to capacity, makes one wonder what the draw cardwas... the celebrities such as Kuli Roberts, Jenna Dover and BassieKhumalo who strutted their stuff or the quality of the garmentsshowcased?
