Most people would just see junk, but for the designers behind theeighth annual Hamilton Trash to Fashion Awards on Saturday night,trash became treasure.
Stunning catwalk-ready garments were created from all sorts ofwaste products, from silage wrap to eel skins. There were more than90 entries in five categories.
The supreme award went to Hamilton Zoo worker Sacha Cumming, withan avant-garde autumn goddess. The papier mache gown used wasteitems found around the zoo, including coffee sacks from chimpbedding, feather from chickens destined for big cats' dinners, andsheets recycled from a reptile display.
Other winners included a dress made of gold coffee pod wrappers(Brooke Martin and Nicole Scott); a dress and jacket made from opshop ties (Krystal Opie); a dress, bag and boots made of hundredsof metal zips (Laura Thomas, Samantha Edwards); a cocktail dressfrom patches of red, pink and white garage sale fabrics (LaurenBriffault) and Sacha Cumming's piece won the Avant-Garbage opensection.
Special awards on the night included a Classic Stand Out Award toMary Hutchison for a sexy red 1940s bathing suit made from an oldNew Zealand Post uniform. The Creative Award went to Alana Scottfor her angelic outfit, including a train and wings, made from morethan 27,000 duck feathers. Krystal Opie won the Young DesignerAward with her tie dress and jacket.
