Coimbatore, May 16 Textile production in key weaving clusters ofKarur, Erode and Coimbatore was hit today with several regionaltextile bodies in these places observing a one-day productionstoppage.
The weavers are concerned over the spiralling cotton and yarnprices coupled with infrastructure lacunae in weaving clusters, including lack of power supply that hurt textile production in theState.
The textile trade activities in the home textile exporting centreof Karur came to a halt as over 3,000 production units associatedwith handloom, powerloom cloth productions, textile processors, including the dyeing and bleaching units and allied industryskipped work.
The Tamil Nadu Textile Federation, an umbrella organisation ofdifferent textile trade affiliates, spearheaded the work stoppagein Karur. Similar work stoppage has been reported among the weavingclusters in the neighbouring Erode district and Palladam inCoimbatore. The textile trade bodies in these places organised ahunger strike also.
According to a spokesman of the Karur-based Tamil Nadu TextileFederation, the home textile manufacturers have demanded amongother things holding the price-line of hank yarns and improving thelocal infrastructure, including the water and power position forthe weaving centres.
The Karur Textile Forum to which seven different textile traderepresentative bodies are affiliated has urged the Centre to allowonly surplus cotton for export and ban export of cotton wasteswhich is the raw material for home textile manufacture. It alsourged the Government to strictly monitor the compliance of hankyarn obligation by the spinning mills to ensure adequate yarnsupply to the handlooms.
The forum has also called upon the Tamil Nadu government to find alasting solution in handling textile industry effluents byestablishing marine discharge through common infrastructure.
