Maharashtra likely to get wet spells

MUMBAI: Maharashtra and other southern states which areexperiencing deficit monsoon are likely to have wet spell by thisweekend or early next week.
While northern states are experiencing good monsoon the southernstates like Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh andGujarat are having deficit monsoon, Deputy Director General IndianMeteorology Department C V V Bhadram said.
The reason is clearly absence of low pressure, cyclonic circulationor depression in Bay of Bengal, he said.
"However, there are indications for improvement in the situationand wetspells can be expected by this weekend or early next week inthe peninsular India," he said adding the exact date can not bepinpointed now.
Several parts of Maharashtra have received scanty rainfall or norainfall. Even Mumbai which is classified to be under normalrainfall area by Met office has not received enough rains, he said.
Total rainfall recorded in Mumbai so far this year in its Colabaobservatory was 1,034.6 mm and in suburban Santa Cruz 1,179.8 mm.
During the last 24 hours till 8.30 am today, the rainfall receivedat Colaba was 5.5 mm and at Santa Cruz it was 2.4 mm, Met officesaid.
