McCrone Bests Beastly Erie, Tops Cut With 42-05

36th: Coates Changed His Mind
Erie wizard Bryan Coates was a favorite pick by pros and punditsalike to show up big at this event. He lived up to that billing onday 1 with a hefty 21-09 limit that landed him in 2nd place afterthe first quarter, but day 2 was a different story.
Coates showed up at the scales today with only 11-13, but that'shardly the most surprising thing about his limit. The well-knownsmallmouth seeker's sack was full of green fish.
"All my friends got a big kick out of that," he said about hislargemouth limit.
He made a 70-mile run across Lake Erie to find his fish on day 1,but when he saw the choppy conditions on the big pond this morning,he decided to forego that trek.
"I looked at my co-angler and said, 'Forget it. We're going to St.Clair.' At some point you have to have some good judgment. I'vemade that run so many times and it'll tear you up. I heard a rumorthat there were four boats that tried to make that run and didn'tmake it. And I heard at least one guy got stranded out there.
"I ran up in St. Clair and went fishing for largies," he added. "Ihad one good smallmouth, but all the rest were largemouths. I thinkI've got enough to make a check, and I'm still here to tell aboutit, so I feel pretty good about my tournament."
He noted there's a BFL Michigan division tournament based out ofSandusky Bay coming up next weekend, and he plans to revisit hisa-spot then.
"Those fish are right where I left them," he said. "I should haveno problem getting to those fish next weekend. I'll get myrevenge."
About where he thinks this event will be won - Erie or St. Clair -he said: "I think you'll see somebody from St. Clair win it thistime. If the wind blows like it did today those guys on Erie aregoing to have a hard time. The wind isn't blowing that hard, butit's coming from the wrong direction (west). Erie is no fun with awest wind."
