Coated Urinary Catheters Protect Against Bacterial Colonization

Ceragenix Pharmaceuticals said its CeraShield coated siliconeurinary catheters used in preclinical tests were able to providecomplete protection against E.coli bacterial colonization for theentire duration of a 21–day study.
The study also examined two leading silver-coated urinary cathetersand one catheter that elutes nitrofurazone in the same protocol.All three of the compared catheters lost antimicrobial activityafter three days.
The product being developed is an antimicrobial coating that can beapplied to endotracheal tubes and other devices. None of the coateddevices have completed preclinical testing.
