ANSWER: Interestingly enough, this is a hobby. Or, it was a hobby.I used to have a stressful job. I was superintendent of corrections(state prison in Vermont.) We bought a house in Desert Hot Springs.My husband (a developer) also bought a building in Desert HotSprings and told me, "You know that quilting stuff you said youwanted to do? Did you want to be my tenant? I need one." I wasgoing to start the hobby and give to my son and daughter-in-law,but they moved back East. So my hobby is now my business.

How long have you been in business?

We started in Desert Hot Springs in November 2002. We moved to PalmDesert this month.

Why did you move to a new location?

We sold the building in Desert Hot Springs. I was negotiating withthe new landlord. I think they decided they wanted a new tenant.Honestly, I lost my lease. When you get lemons you make lemonade.But now I'm a lot closer to home and a lot closer to my customerbase.

How do you juggle your personal life with the demands of yourbusiness?

We do work a lot. I really think it's difficult to find a balance.Once you're self-employed, once you own the business, you don'tjust lock the door and go home. You go home and you sit in front ofthe computer and make something.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a small businessowner?

Honestly I get to make my own hours. I don't have to deal with thekind of stress I had before. I'm my own boss. If I'm going to bebossing someone it might as well be me.

How do you retain quality employees?

They love what they do. Everyone has been here a minimum of 3
