A beautiful blouse. In the recent New York and European collectionsfor fall, many truly exquisite blouses, some beaded and feathered,were shown with long skirts, short skirts, velvet pants andtuxedo-striped pants, to name a few pairings.

What is the difference between the Kelly bag and the Birkin bag? Iknow they are both made by Hermes. - J.L., Staten Island, N.Y.

The Kelly bag, named for Grace Kelly, became famous in 1958 whenthe princess was photographed for Life magazine holding littlePrincess Caroline in one hand and covering her newly pregnant tummywith her purse. That bag has an envelope closing with a padlock andis usually worn with two straps hanging down, unfastened. When Iasked an Hermes spokeswoman why so many women wear their Kellyswith the straps unfastened, she said it was probably just to savethe time it takes to fasten them. I kind of doubt that.
The Birkin bag, named for the singer and actress Jane Birkin, whofirst carried it in 1984, has three tabs at the top closing. MostBirkin devotees also leave the straps hanging. The bags arecustom-made by hand, and the last I checked there was a waitinglist for each. Prices can go as high as $30,000, sometimes more,for the crocodile versions.
