KING Kev may have brought a winning streak back to St James’s park, but now the Newcastle fanatics can get their own slice of the glory days.
Because a lifelong Newcastle supporter is putting £15,000 of Tyneside history up for sale.
Ken Mutch, 55, from L’Arbre Crescent in Fellside Park, Whickham, Newcastle, is going to auction with a huge collection of programmes, photos and pennants from the club’s past.
The sales manager has hoarded boxes of Newcastle treasures collected over the years by three generations of his family who have all been associated with Newcastle United.
With no children to pass the heirlooms on to, Ken is now putting them on to the open market.
The pick of the memorabilia is a pennant presented to Newcastle skipper Bob Moncur in the second leg victory of the 1969 Fairs Cup final against Ujpesti Dozsa.
It found its way into the hands of Ken’s father, Alec Mutch, who was the physio at Newcastle for more than 50 years, between 1929 to 1987.
Ken said: “Bob Moncur was the captain in that game, and he gave the pennant to Joe Harvey to look after.
“Joe gave it to my dad and he ended up keeping it.
“I don’t have any kids, so I thought it was a good time to get rid of it.”
Ken, who lives with his wife Cindy, 55, is the youngest in a long line of family with footballing pedigree.
His grandfather, Sandy Mutch, was goalkeeper for Aberdeen and Newcastle and played in the 1922 FA Cup Final for Huddersfield.
And Alec Mutch, Ken’s father, joined the Newcastle United ground staff when he was only 16. By his 19th birthday he was the third team trainer.
He remains the longest serving member of staff having spent 58 years as the club’s physio.
So it is only natural that Ken spent his childhood dining with Joe Harvey, holidaying with “Jinky” Jimmy Smith and rubbing shoulders with Bob Moncur.
And along the way he has picked up a few gems. Going under the hammer at Bonhams Auctioneers in Chester on June 4 is a Sondico football used in Kevin Keegan’s testimonial game in 1984 – and signed by The Messiah himself.
A spare Newcastle shirt made for the 1976 League Cup Final against Manchester City, but with no player number, is up for grabs.
And a photo album is being sold that captures Newcastle’s 1952 FA Cup Final 1-0 win over Arsenal. It is valued at between £350 and £500 and includes images of the team shaking hands with Sir Winston Churchill prior to the clash.
There is also an embroidered tablecloth signed by members of the 1951/1952 Newcastle team including Joe Harvey, Len Shackleton and Doug Wright.
Ken said: “I used to have these things hanging on my wall, but my mother recently died and I didn’t know what to do with it all.
“I’ve kept what I wanted to keep, I have the miniature Fairs Cup trophy that was given to my father in 1969, and photographs and cuttings.
“I also kept my grandfather’s FA Cup Winners medal from 1922, but everything else is going really.”
