Developer Theo Onisforou wants Wingecarribee Shire Council to allow the community to vote on whether they would prefer covering the Bowral Swimming Pool to building a new leisure centre at Eridge Park.
According to quotes obtained by Mr Onisforou, a high-strength plastic fabric cover for the existing 50-metre pool could cost as little as $2.2 million (without drop-down walls) or $2.5 million (with walls).
The quotes provided by s2 corporation for a 60 metre by 40 metre sportspace structure do not include foundations and footings or upgrading of the 38-year-old pool and facilities and could vary by up to 30 per cent.
The sportspace fabric has a life expectancy of 25 years.
After reviewing the sportspace proposal, Wingecarribee Shire Council said a more realistic cost of covering the Bowral Pool, based on costings for the leisure centre, which would be $9.8 million.
Council’s estimates of the cost of the covering the pool to include $3.3 million for purchase of the cover (allowing for a 30 per cent variation), $150,000 for foundations and footings, $3.5 million for pool renovation, $500,000 to make change rooms accessible to the covered pool, and $50,000 for additional parking to cater for a year-round facility, as well as office and storage space, lighting, rainwater tanks and plumbing to toilets, landscaping and professional fees.
Council general manager Mike Hyde said the additional costs of heating the Bowral Pool over an extended season would be higher than operating costs for a new custom-built facility.
