Fashion at the click of a mouse

[2008-3-31]

India is the flavour of this season and the churidar trouser is a must-have worn either with a cocoon shaped jacket or a sherwani cut to various lengths. Continuing with the latest no-bling trend, embroidery was very rarely seen and fabric texturing is the most important trend. Ribbons of fabric were woven or looped, fabrics were scrunched or pleated in various ways. Chanel showed tweed jackets frayed at the elbows and Rodarte’s frayed knit dresses were also echoed in a silver mesh draped over strictly tailored suits and dresses at Narciso Rodriguez. Plaids and checks appeared in various collections and were treated as surface ornamentation using ribbons of fabrics. Strict tailoring was important in collections at Balenciaga and Givenchy.

With newfound confidence, women have realised the importance of their femininity and love flaunting it in dresses, which are draped or pleated to figure hugging shapes, or shapes that reflect a new volume.

The cocoon and bubble, which have been appearing for a few seasons, are still strong but are arrived at using various interesting techniques in cutting and draping.

Fabrics are smooth and luxurious and the psychedelic 70’s prints seem to be slowly losing ground to florals and pastels. Luxe has replaced bling and a few designers were even brave enough to use fur. Imitation crocodile leather dominated the accessory line of most designers and was also cut into simple dresses and trouser suits at Boots appeared from ankle to crotch level with heels made of acrylic spheres and other eye-catching innovations.

Grey continues to be the favourite colour appearing from a silvery tone to severe stone in nearly all collections. The monotony of colour was broken with muted pastel shades and the effect was mostly monochromatic.

Pinks, mauves, butterscotch yellows, aqua blues, and sea greens, all in vintage pastel hues dominated the colour charts. While clean and minimal still ruled the runway, a few designers delved into fantasy. Alexander McQueen, after an extended stay in India, was inspired by the British Raj. Anna Sui used Aztec American-Indian inspirations, which were mixed into her collection eclectically.

Alber Elbaz of Lanvin’s futuristic cutting has inspired a lot of new shapes that have emerged this season. The look is concealing rather than revealing, though bare-backs were seen in nearly every evening look. Lengths varied from mini to maxi and either hug the body sensuously or billow out in a new volume.
