China steps up the price regulation of housing materials after quake

 The National Development and ReformCommission on Sunday urged local authorities to strengthenprice regulation, especially of tents and other materials that canbe used for temporary shelter.
Local price regulators could use temporary measures to stabilizeprices of tent cloth, steel tubing and polystyrene, and to ensurethe supply and transportation of resources closely related toquake-relief needs, said an emergency notice issued here by theNDRC.
The notice also ordered relevant parties to carry out dailymonitoring and price controls and punish speculators.
Temporary controls were imposed on May 14 on food prices andtransportation fares in the quake-hit provinces of Sichuan, Gansuand Shaanxi and in Chongqing municipality to stem hoarding andspeculation.
