Clariant Masterbatches has recently announced the launch a newfamily of "heavyweight" compounds, which offer designers andmanufacturers of personal care products a new alternative to metalin applications where the weight and other characteristics of metalare desirable.
The new plastic materials can be made using standard processingmethods, simplifying manufacturing and reducing total part pricing.Along with special effects, and color and additive masterbatchesfor packaging applications, these compounds will be featured at theHBA Global Exposition, the product development event for thecosmetics, fragrance and personal care industries held fromSeptember 9 to 11 this year in New York City.
According to Peter Prusak, Head of the North American Packagingmarket segment for Clariant Masterbatches, metal parts are oftenquite time-consuming and costly to produce, especially incomplicated shapes, so designers increasingly turn to plastics fordesign flexibility, manufacturing ease and cost benefits.
Materials like tungsten, barium sulfate and bismuth are used toimpart metallic qualities to a wide range of thermoplastic resins, including polyolefins, nylon, PVC, ABS and other engineeringplastics. Depending on the filler used and its loading, many ofthese formulations also can be custom colored, taking advantage ofClariant's knowledge and experience in this area.
