Novel, exciting and sometimes unpredictable,figure-eight school bus and trailer races entertained a packedhouse at Illiana Motor Speedway on Saturday night during Crash FestNo. 1.

Ryan Sandberg was the winner of the figure-eight bus race, defeating Harold Cooper and Jim Kunis. A total of eight buseslumbered around Illiana's quarter-mile, figure-eight oval withcompetitors trying to avoid collisions at the intersection of thefigure-eight.

Seeing a bunch of camping and boat trailers from years past gettorn to pieces, Ken Blankenship survived the battle and bested TonyReyes and Jeff Butman in the figure-eight trailer race competition. The race had to be stopped and "red flagged" twice for flippingvehicles.

A full program of Pure Stock, four-cylinder stock car action waspart of the night's events with "hare & hounds", backward andchicane races giving drivers plenty to test their racing skills. The idea of the "hare & hounds" races is for the leader (the hare)to lead the pack of fellow racers (the hounds) this way and thatway around the quarter-mile, figure-eight track, making consecutivelaps in never the same configuration. Paul McKeague and Dave Jacobswere the winners of these two races.

Brandon Foster defeated Joe Moeglin and Bryan Keen in the backwardrace, while Jacobs made it two wins for the night as he coped thechicane race, another event utilizing both the quarter-mile andfigure-eight tracks, over Chris Sandberg and Rich Dearborn.

Kerry Martin borrowed her son's Pure Stock racer and made off withtop honors in the powder puff race for strictly female competitors.Glenn Kosiara was the overall winner of the spectator, one-on-one,drag races around the quarter-mile oval.
