New Temperature Sensor for Autoclave Steam Sterilizers ResistsMoisture Intrusion

A new moisture-resistant RTD, designed for the harsh environmentsof autoclave steam sterilizers, has been introduced by WeedInstrument of Round Rock, Texas.

The new RTD, the Model 3312B, uses a proprietary cable materialthat withstands moisture intrusion during pressure and vacuumcycling, and meets USP Class VI requirements for use in sanitaryenvironments.

The new cable material also withstands the physical abuse thatoften occurs during loading and unloading of large sterilizers. Thematerial has low memory and, thus, resists kinking.

Model 3312B comes in a variety of both sheath and lead-wire jacketdiameters. It is also available in a sharp-pointed version for easyinsertion into rubber capped vials, small bottles in tray washersand sterile bags. It does not sacrifice time response, assuringquick, accurate temperature measurement without delay or inaccuratereadings.

The 3312B was developed after extensive research at Weed Instrumentdemonstrated that with Teflon or Silicon jacketed wires, the twomaterial types used in most other autoclave sensor designs,moisture intrusion frequently occurs. During the pressure and fullvacuum cycling in the sterilizer chamber, moisture is drawn throughthe jacketed material and onto the bare copper wires leading to thesensor. Repeated testing over an 8 month period proved that sensorfailure is a function of the cable material and not impropersealing of the cable to the sensor. The 3312B, which utilizes theproprietary cable jacket material, eliminates the moistureintrusion problems.
