BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Euro zone new industrial orders fell3.5 percent in May from April, and were down 4.4 percentyear-on-year, EU statistics agency Eurostat reported.
Economists polled by Thomson Financial News had forecast amonth-on-month fall of 0.7 pct.
Month-on-month, Eurostat said new orders for transport equipmentfell 7.0 percent. New orders for chemicals and related productsfell by 0.5 percent, basic metals and related products dropped 2.4percent and electrical and electronic equipment lost 3.0 percent.
Manufacturing of machinery and equipment declined by 4.1 percentand textiles and textile products fell by 4.2 percent.
Compared with a year earlier, basic metals and related productsrose 0.9 percent, and electrical and electronic equipment lost 2.8percent.
Chemicals fell 0.9 percent and machinery and equipment lost 6.3percent.
Textiles was down 8.6 percent and new orders for transportequipment fell by 10.1 percent.
