CARRBORO -- Mayor Mark Chilton says a new barbed wire fence outsidea Carrboro apartment complex closes a driveway providing access toChapel Hill-owned property and may be illegal. Chilton contacted elected leaders and town staff in both towns andshared some research he had done showing that a new fence at EstesPark has closed off the driveway to the town-owned Leo Merrittproperty. That driveway is the most convenient place for pedestrians fromneighboring Village West to cross the tracks on their way todowntown Carrboro. Chilton is trying to save the pedestrian path and has asked for ameeting with management at Estes Park Apartments. Efforts to reachShannon Brummett, regional property manager, General ServicesCorporation, have been unsuccessful. Bill Webster, Chapel Hills assistant parks and recreationdirector, said the 9-acre parcel was part of more than 20 acres thetown purchased from Merritts estate a couple of years ago. We need to do a little bit more research, Webster said. If we doindeed have legal access, then weve got a problem.
