Vietnam needs US $2.5bil for environmental pollution treatment a year

VietNamNet Bridge - The State budget can satisfy just one third ofthe total capital needs ($2.5 billion) for pollution treatment peryear.
According to the latest report by the World Bank (WB), industriesthat cause the most serious pollution to the environment are theones which are key to the economy. The biggest being the processingindustry, which accounts for 66% of the industrial workforce,creates 52% of industrial revenue and contains over 94,000companies.
Of the highest pollution causing businesses, State-owned companiesaccount for 9%, foreign-owned 11% and the private sector theremainder.
Major polluting businesses are those that produce fertilizers,pesticides, pharmaceutical products and industrial chemicals. Otherpollution causers are metallurgy, metal processing and mechanicalengineering companies.
Seafood processing, leather tanning and leather processing, pulpand paper, cement, wood processing, packing, material and porcelainindustries are also big polluters.
Most of the industrial factories are based in the five cities ofHCM City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai in the South, and Hanoi and HaiPhong in the North. These cities account for over 63% of the totalworkforce and nearly 55% of industrial factories.
The top polluted provinces and cities in Vietnam are HCM City,Hanoi, Hai Phong, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, DaNang, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Can Tho.
Vietnam is now in serious shortage of funds for dealing withenvironmental pollution. The country needs US $2.5 billion a year,but the government can allocate only around $450 million or onefifth of what is needed.
