(RTTNews) - Monday, specialty metal producer AlleghenyTechnologies Inc. (ATI: News ) said that its next-generation ATI 500-MIL armor steel has beenselected for an armored situational awareness kit on the U.S.Army's Stryker Light Armored Vehicles. Allegheny said it was thefirst major legacy-vehicle military application for the newlydeveloped specialty metal. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based company's ATI 500-MIL steel isthe first new, high-hard steel armor developed in America since theVietnam conflict and meets new U.S. MIL-DTL-46100E high-hardspecifications for ballistic performance. ATI 500-MIL protectsagainst threats such as armor-piercing rounds and has goodblast-resistance properties. In addition to its use on a full range of ground vehicles, ATI500-MIL armor steel can be installed on above-deck structures forships and aboard aircraft in perforated versions. ATI 500-MIL armorsteel is currently available in plate form in thickness gaugingfrom 3/16 inch to 1 inch or 0.5 to 2.5 cm and in sizes as large as96 X 300 inches or 243 X 763 cm. The new add-on kit, known as the StrykShield is comprised of frontand side transparent armor windows that are mounted in a frameworkbuilt with ATI 500-MIL high-hard armor steel. The U.S. Army's Rapid Equipping Force has ordered 690 StrykShieldkits for deployment on Stryker vehicles. Produced by Carapace Armor Technology, the StrykShield kit providesincreased visibility and situational awareness for Stryker crews,while providing full ballistic and blast protection. TheStrykShield kit has been successfully fielded and battle tested inIraq for two years.
