ArcelorMittal USA would raise its carbon base price to $64.75/CWT

In the Unite State, the price of standard steel plate is $1,330/st, it increases about 90/st  in only one month. Sources at plate mills as well as buyers atprocessing and distribution centers said demand for plate remains at very highlevels in North America and shows no signs of falling back anytime soon. The Platts price assessment of grade A36 carbon plateincreased to a new range of $1,330-1,360/st ex-works Southeast US, reflecting thetightness of this market. The import price assessment remained unchanged at$1,230/st CIF Houston, pending verification of any business done at higher pricesfor new orders. Emboldened by fundamentals working in their favor, all majordomestic producers have announced anther round of price increases beginningnext month. ArcelorMittal USA said it would raise its carbon base price to $64.75/CWT ($1,295/st) from $62.25/CWT ($1,245) effective on August3. It is the country's largest producer of steel plate, producing andprocessing all grades and sizes of plate at five US locations. While ArcelorMittal's new base price is $1,295/st from August3, the company adds a raw material surcharge of $200/st. This would raisethe company's list price for August to $1,495 or $74.75/CWT. Extras for high-strength quenched or heat-tempered plate would drive priceseven higher. It is the company's fifth price adjustment this year. "ArcelorMittal enjoys excellent relationships with itscustomers. We will continue to engage in constructive dialogue with each of them onpricing, given present market conditions," said company spokesman AdamWarrington. A second plate producer, Nucor, plans to raise base prices ofdiscrete (cut-to-length) plate and coiled plate by $100/st ($5/CWT) inAugust, said several buyers. Nucor produces plate products at two mini-mills inTuscaloosa, Alabama and Hertford County, North Carolina. Claymont Steel also plans to raise its mill prices by $100/stnext month. Claymont is based in Delaware and mainly supplies plate in smallerorder sizes and non-standard dimensions.
