Library Renovation Project will bring construction jobs, improvecampus

State Senators Deb Cherry (D-Burton) and John Gleason (D-Flushing)voted to pass the Capital Outlay budget recently, which includesmore than $4 million toward a project to renovate Mott CommunityCollege’s library. This project will create numerousconstruction and related jobs in Flint and renovates more than81,000 square feet of space in the main library.

“ As a Mott Community College Alumni, I’m very pleasedto help my school receive funding to improve their library,”said Sen. Gleason. “This construction project is a great wayto enhance Mott’s campus and help turn aroundMichigan’s economy through attracting hundreds of jobs andputting local people to work.”

Mott Community College is one of only a few schools throughout thestate to receive funding for construction projects. Many collegesand universities have been waiting for several years for theirprojects to be approved and the Capital Outlay budget has helpedmake some of these projects a reality. The Capital Outlay budgetaccelerates construction, expansion and improvement projects atairports, colleges, universities, military facilities and stateparks, creating thousands of new jobs across Michigan.

“ Budget negotiations earlier this summer left Mott and otherschools waiting with baited breath for the approval of theseprojects,” said Sen. Cherry. “With today’s budgetpassage, they can break ground and cut ribbons and get to workexpanding our college and university campuses and putting moreMichigan men and women to work.”

Due to federal funding deadlines, the airport projects in theoriginal Capitol Outlay budget were already approved earlier thisyear. The budget passed today includes $275 million in statefunding, with $220 million going toward projects at colleges anduniversities, updating campuses and creating thousands of new jobsacross Michigan.
