CARLSBAD, Calif. — September 19, 2008 — Emerson NetworkPower, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) and the global leader inenabling Business-Critical Continuity™, has launched two newhigh-efficiency bulk front-end power supplies for systems that usedistributed power architectures. Rated at 1200 watts and 2000 wattsrespectively, the new DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies generatea main payload output of 12 Vdc and an auxiliary output of 3.3 Vdcfor powering standby circuitry. An alternative auxiliary output of5 Vdc is optionally available. Both power supplies are digitallyprogrammable – they are equipped with an I2C interface anduse the industry-standard PMBus™ communications protocol.

Forming the latest additions to Emerson Network Powers popular andexpanding DS series product line, the DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 areintended primarily for use in rack-mounting server typeapplications, such as data centers. The power supplies use anadvanced power conversion topology to maximize efficiency and haveexceptionally compact form factors; both models have a height ofjust 1.6 inches, which makes them ideal for use in 1U highrack-mounting equipment.

DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies feature a very wide 90 to 264Vac input voltage range and employ active power factor correctionto minimize input harmonic current distortion and to ensurecompliance with the international EN61000-3-2 standard – theyhave a power factor of 0.99 typical. The power supplies alsofeature active ac inrush control, to automatically limit inrushcurrent at turn-on to 55 A maximum.

Both power supplies employ a new patent-pending ultra highefficiency conversion topology, together with an innovative powertransformer and rectifier construction that further improves powerdensity and reduces interconnect power losses. The power suppliesmain +12 Vdc payload output is digitally programmable over therange 11.4 to 12.6 Vdc, and users have a choice of standard I2C oradvanced PMBus communications. The control software runs underWindows® on any standard PC, and uses a highly intuitivegraphical user interface to simplify power supply set-up.

The DS1200-3 can deliver up to 98.4 A from its main +12 Vdc payloadoutput, and up to 6 A from its +3.3 Vdc auxiliary output. Thesupply has a 1U x 2U form factor – it measures 10.9 x 3.3inches, with a height of 1.6 inches – and has a power densityof more than 21 watts per cubic inch. When fed with a 180 to 264Vac input, the DS1200-3 can achieve a very high – 91 percenttypical – conversion efficiency at 50 percent full load.

The DS2000-3 power supply is capable of delivering up to 164.2 Afrom its main +12 Vdc payload output, and up to 9 A from itsauxiliary +3.3 Vdc output. The DS2000-3 has a 1U x 3U form factor– it measures 11.6 x 4.2 x 1.6 inches – and has anexceptionally high power density of 26 watts per cubic inch. Whenfed with a 180 to 264 Vac input, the power supply can achieve inexcess of 92 percent efficiency between 50 percent and 75 percentfull load.

DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies offer active single-wirecurrent sharing which operates from 10 to 100% of full load, enabling multiple supplies to be easily paralleled for very highcurrent applications. Both supplies are hot pluggable, have nominimum load requirement, and incorporate low-loss internal ORingFETs (Field Effect Transistors) on their main 12 V output, forfault-tolerant and N+1 redundancy applications.

Both power supplies contain a serial EEPROM (electrically erasableprogrammable read-only memory) that is preprogrammed with dataabout the unit – including its type, serial number and dateof manufacture – to facilitate replacement in the field. Abuilt-in I2C interface, which uses the PMBus communicationsprotocol, enables the data to be read back to the system underpower; the interface also allows the system to interrogate thepower supply to ascertain various operational parameters, includinginput and output status, fan blocked or running under-speed, andovercurrent and overvoltage flags.

DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies incorporate fan cooling withautomatic speed control and have an ambient operating temperaturerange of -10 to +50 degrees Celsius, with 50 percent derating at+70 degrees Celsius. The power supplies meet the rigorous EN55022-Band FCC part 15 Class B conducted and radiated emissions standards, and comply with applicable EMC immunity standards, includingEN61000-3-2 and -3, and EN61000-4-2, -3, -4, -5 and -11. Thesupplies carry EN60950 and UL/cUL 60950 safety approvals.

Sample quantities of DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies areavailable for immediate delivery. Standard lead-time is stock to 8weeks. Pricing starts at US $510 for the DS1200-3 and US $791 forthe DS2000-3, in quantities of 100.
