When Doyle isn't coaching youth football and basketball games, he'sbusy with the Catholic Youth Organization raising funds for eventssuch as golf tournaments. A father of three, Doyle is known for hisenergy-sensitive engineering solutions for HVAC systems, includinga Region 3 ASHRAE technology award for an innovativeenergy-recovery design project that earned a LEED Silvercertification. The project, a GSA/FDA Central Shared Use Facilityin White Oak, Md., houses a conference and training center,library, food service area, fitness center, credit union, healthunit, and data center, and incorporates sustainable practices likea green roof, natural ventilation, and solar shading devices.“The things that interest me are complex projects withintegrated architectural and engineering solutions,” Doylesaid. Doyle became an engineer because of his father, whoencouraged Doyle to take ownership in his life. After graduatingfrom high school, Doyle painted cars but soon became irritated withhis low wages and decided to go to college. He paid his own way,completing his degree after six years of working his way throughschool. His advice to others: “It is as important to knowwhat you don't know as it is to know what you do know.”
The daughter of a western Minnesota hog-wheat-corn-soy farmer,Ekola learned sustainable living first hand. These are practicesshe continues today as a civil engineer. “We have a hugeworld with a lot of resources, but if we don't take care of them,it will impact each person's life,” she said. An innovator,Ekola has helped Minnesota and Wisconsin communities find creativesolutions for their biosolids facilities. As a civil engineer forthe Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, Ekola helped the plantcreate an aerobic digestion system so the biosolids can be re-usedas fertilizer while the methane burned in the boiler can be usedfor heat. She has negotiated and managed wholesale power supplycontracts for the municipal electrical utility for the city ofMelrose and worked as the construction and project manager for the50-acre Cold Spring Business Park in Cold Spring, Minn. Ekola, amother of two, is a Sunday school teacher and enjoys gardening withher family. She is one of the founders of the Middle Sauk RiverWater Festival, which teaches fourth graders about the importanceof preserving water resources, and regularly volunteers in Duluthto help young women become interested in math and science. When it comes to lights, Farmer is all about theexperience—the big experience. Farmer is probably best knownfor installing 185 LED fixtures on the “Big Dam Bridge”in Little Rock, Ark. At 4,200 ft, it is the world's largestpedestrian bridge that was constructed specifically forrecreational purposes. As senior project engineer for the bridge,Farmer developed plans and specifications for a new lighting andwireless control system that could perform lighting shows at nightvia 13 lighting and control panels. The project earned an AmericanCouncil of Engineering Companies of Arkansas (ACECA) engineeringexcellence award and continues to impress visitors today. Farmerdesigned an ACECA excellence award-winning upgraded accessbiometric control system for Little Rock Airport before mostairports were using multiple security systems. A past president ofGarver Engineers standards committee, Farmer said it's important tomake time for your family. Farmer has two children, son Quinn, 7,and daughter, Chandler, 4, with wife, Mica. He is learning to playthe guitar and enjoys dressing up in a Robin Hood–like tunicwith a few friends to attend the annual Texas Renaissance Festival.

Gutierrez's love of music started with a plastic toy organ hereceived as a child. Gutierrez knew he wanted to become an engineerlike his uncle and older brother. While minoring in music at DukeUniversity, Gutierrez found—by accident—the perfect wayto blend his interests. Gutierrez now designs and engineers audioand video systems for many sport stadiums and performance venues,including Yankee Stadium, Nationals Ballpark, Busch Stadium,Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park, and his alma mater's CameronIndoor Stadium. “The deadlines are hard and fast, becauseeveryone knows when opening day is,” he said. Gutierrez alsohelped renovate the neo gothic Washington National Cathedral,maintaining its historic ambience while improving its sound system.He considers himself lucky because he's improved all of hisfavorite teams' stadiums, with the exception of one: Miami'sDolphin Stadium. When he's not working, Gutierrez, a father of two,still enjoys playing classical, jazz, and pop music on the piano.He also enjoys playing golf in his spare time. He tells engineeringstudents: ”Study hard, work hard, play hard, and don't losesight of things away from the office.”
