Depending on the extent of the grounds in which you are planting,there are a number of options you might investigate. Subject tosuitable water sources, appropriate pressures and distances, itmight be possible to design a system, or several, based on dripirrigation. This could accommodate the most valuable trees, alongwith any beds and borders, and could be fully automatic with watermonitoring equipment and controllers.
Another option, as you mention, is the irrigation ring. There areseveral available in the UK but popular units are the GreenleafProducts' range of waterers, the Tree Watering/Root Drencher fromArbortech and the Dendro-Scott ventilation and irrigation systemfrom Peter Scott Tree Care.
Such products are designed largely for planting in urban areas,close to road sides and other areas where hard surfaces may causemuch of the available rainfall to be diverted away from the tree,but could be used as an easy means to watering the rootzone inother situations. You would still need to water from a bowser indry spells, but you would be sure the water was getting to where itwas needed. Arbortech's Root Drencher incorporates a reservoir. Ittakes 30 seconds to fill but will apply 18 to 20 litres of waterover a couple of hours.
Q Where can I get loading ramps?
A To choose a suitable one you need to think about the weight anddimensions of what you loading, the vehicle being loaded into, andhow the ramps themselves will be stored and transported.
Two firms that can help are Sara Ramps (tel: 01923 208888) andRochford GM (01963 828000). Sara offers a good selection ofaluminium ramps, including pedestrian ramps, plant ramps and lowloading ramps.
Rochford GM now supplies folding and arching loading ramps underthe Ardisam brand. These ramps are made from aluminium and offer away to load kit ranging from garden tractors to ATVs.
