During the standoff police cordoned off several blocks around thearea and called in a negotiator. One family that lived next doorwas evacuated.
Jerry Chambers and his wife, whose home is just 50 feet from thegarage, were in bed when police banged on the door to ask them toget out.
At first Chambers thought it was the neighbor knocking.
"He has come over a couple of times at night, knocking on the doorand wanting to talk," Chambers said. "I wasn't going to botheranswering the door."
Then Chambers saw police flashlights shining in his window andpolice called on the telephone.
"They just said there is a situation and you have got to get out,"Chambers said.
Chambers said the man believed to be in the garage is a nice guy,but "troubled."
"He is back there by himself. He doesn't bother anybody," Chamberssaid.
Chambers described the man as in his 40s. The man told Chambers hehad been a Navy SEAL, a claim Chambers was unable to confirm.
