AITP Announces Standards Of Responsibility

Chicago, IL - The Association of Information TechnologyProfessionals ("AITP") announced that it has issued a formal set ofStandards of Responsibility for Handling Electronic Waste("eWaste") which it recommends be adopted by information technologyorganizations.
According to AITP President Mark Kleine, "Approximately 1 billionpieces of computer equipment will become potential scrap by 2010.Dealing with electronic waste is now an environmental crisis. Theinappropriate handling of eWaste also exposes individuals andorganizations to the loss of confidential and/or proprietaryinformation."
AITP's Legislative Affairs Committee developed these Standards inconsultation with LifeSpan Technology Recycling, a leading providerof secure and environmentally compliant electronic recycling anddata destruction services. Establish both environmental and privacy statements and goalsregarding how they will commit to manage end-of-life electronics,as well as establish a written account of their managementpractices. Manage operations and downstream vendor/technology selections inaccordance with a hierarchy of responsible management strategiesfor end-of-life electronics equipment. Maintain compliance with all applicable environmental, health, andsafety legal requirements. Employ an IT asset retirement solution that will utilize theirinternal or their vendor's Environmental, Health, and SafetyManagement System(s) ("EMS") to ensure effective management of theenvironmental and health and safety impacts of their operations. Maintain documentation sufficient to demonstrate the management andmaterial flow of the equipment, components, and materials that passthrough their facilities. Utilize practices at their facilities that protect worker safety,public health, and the environment. Obtain written assurances that downstream vendors that receiveMaterials of Concern
