Honda selects Droop and Rein 5-axis machining

The FOGS D40 machines profiled surfaces very close to theprogrammed CAD contour.
Manual finishing is therefore significantly reduced, so productioncosts are lower and quality is improved.
During the machine tool selection process, Honda decided that Droop+ Rein 5-axis machining would eliminate a high proportion of manualfinishing work.
The machine is primarily intended to produce sheet metal press tools for the automotive industry.
With an X-axis of 6800mm, a Y-axis of 3500mm and a Z-axis of1500mm, the working volume of the FOGS 35 68 D40 C ordered is morethan 35m3.
The static and dynamic rigidity of the cross beam give the requiredstability for rough milling.
As the cross beam has to be moved in only the X-axis, the masses tobe accelerated when finishing are relatively constant.
This allows high feed rates combined with excellent contour accuracy.
The gantry carries the Y-axis cross slide, while the D40 millinghead moves in the Z-axis.
The fork-type head also performs movements in the B- and C-axis,with fully interpolative control of both with the linear axes.
Owing to this construction, the milling tool carries out all of therotary movements, allowing maximum feed rates, as the moving massesare low.
Interchangeable main drive motor spindles of 20kW and 40kW offermaximum speeds of 18,000 or 5,000 rev/min respectively.
Control is by Heidenhain CNC.
