The Connecticut Light & Power Company ("CL&P") and TheUnited Illuminating Company ("UI") have issued a Notice of Interest("NOI") to explore opportunities for long-term power contracts.
The purpose of the NOI is to obtain information on prospectsavailable for long-term power contracts for market products andpower generation that can benefit Connecticut consumers. Long-termpower contracts can be a key tool in helping to manage energysupply costs. Currently, CL&P and UI can only negotiateshort-term contracts, whose prices have a greater chance of beingaffected by factors such as weather disruptions or world-wideevents.
CL&P and UI are seeking proposals from all types of powersellers to help in the development of a procurement plan andcomprehensive RFP for long-term power supply.
"We're giving the wholesale power market an opportunity todemonstrate what it can do to meet Connecticut's need for stablepower prices," said Alan Trotta, UI's manager of wholesale powercontracts. "UI believes that long-term contracts can be part of thesolution to mitigate the impact on customers of volatile short-termenergy pricing."
"For the past few years, CL&P has been advocating the need forlong-term contracts and how beneficial they can be for ourcustomers," said Jim Shuckerow, director, Wholesale PowerContracts, CL&P. "This NOI expands the opportunities forCL&P to best minimize future power supply costs."
