• Stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two dangerous side effects ofnot staying hydrated and overdoing summer exercise. Signs of heatexhaustion include fatigue, weakness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache and muscle cramps. Signs of heat stroke include a rapidpulse, difficulty breathing, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizure and coma.
• Watch what you wear. Light-colored and lightweight clothing is best for exercising inthe heat. A well-ventilated hat with a brim and sunglasses protectsthe scalp, face and eyes.
• Time it right. Exercise during the coolest part of the day -- usually before 7a.m. or after 6 p.m.
• Slow down. Heat and humidity will slow you down. If you're feeling bad, finda cool place to get your core temperature down. Be sure to talkwith your doctor about starting an exercise regimen and issuesabout heat and hydration.
If you eat a piece of today's Lemon Sponge Cake for a post workoutdessert, have it with a glass of water to rehydrate.
