Beargrip, a Dutch company producing hand tools, has introducedbitsets with a bit holder made of thermoplastic polyurethaneDesmopan. Developed by Bayer MaterialScience AG specialists, thismaterial is more and more often used for tool handles to give themwear-resistant and high quality organoleptic properties.
The complete set is injection molded using the so-called hard/softtwo-component technology. The ClipPac is made of a hard plystyreneand ABS blend, whereas the bit holder is made of soft TPUDesmopan487.
Steven Daelemans, a TPU expert at Bayer MaterialScience AG, says,“In this application, several advantages of our material cometogether. The high coefficient of friction ensures that the bitsare held in the holes securely and the hole do not increase in sizeeven if the tool is in constant use. This is possible due to thelow compression set, good wear resistance, tear strength and crackpropagation resistance of our TPU”.
Another reason for choosing Desmopan, with a Shore A hardness of86, is that the surface feels warm, soft and dry, it is resistantto oils, greases, detergents and other media the toolmakersencounter every day. Besides, TPU retains its properties in abroad temperature range and it is weather resistant.
Beargrip attaches major importance to low production costs becausethere is a keen price competition in such market sector as toolproduction. Desmopan scores in this respect too because it ishighly processable: the melt solidifies quickly and that iseconomical production and short cycle times. Plastics.ru
