A local boat owner is urging his fellow mariners to makesure they have proper insurance for their vessel after his boat andtrailer worth more than $200,000 were stolen.
Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies are searching for the boatand trailer that were reported stolen from a storage facility inthe 5300 block of Southeast Woodham Street.
According to the incident report, Brian O'Donnell, 32, of the 3300block of Southeast Dixie Highway, Stuart, normally houses the boat inside a building on property heowns at the Palm City address, but recently he had placed itoutside on display because he was in the process of selling it.
When he went to check on the boat Friday, he discovered it had beenstolen. He told deputies the theft probably occurred more than aweek ago because there were no fresh tire tracks leading from thesite.
"I ran an ad in 'The Boat Trader,' and the thieves probably sawthat and scoped out the place and then struck," O'Donnell said.
O'Donnell described the boat as a 42-foot, 1996 Thunderbird Formula419 SR-1, white with multicolored racing stripes with the name"Cause I Can" inscribed on the sides.
He said there were several locks on a gate and on the boat andtrailer as well, which had been smashed to gain access.
O'Donnell, who is employed in the marine industry, cautioned boatowners: "Make certain you have the proper insurance." He noted somepolicies cover a boat whether it is stored inside or outside, others don't.
