"It was bent down so far that you could put a whole anotherhelmet through my facemask," he said. "I didn't knowanything was wrong. I went back to the huddle and guys were like,'You've got to go to the sideline.' I played a few more plays andthen went out. I was mad. I didn't want to come out."
Said Hill: "Bernard is a tough kid. He does not lacktoughness, I can promise you that." 'Everything is already here'
A third-round pick in 2004, Berrian spent four seasons with theBears, the past two as a starter. He has not eclipsed 1,000 yardsreceiving in a season nor been selected to the Pro Bowl. But he had122 receptions for 1,726 yards and 11 touchdowns the past twoseasons combined and has played in one Super Bowl.
The Bears offered him a five-year, $25 million contract thiswinter, but the Vikings gave him a more lucrative contract and achance to be their go-to receiver.
"It seemed like everything is already here," Berriansaid. "I just liked everything about it."
The Vikings liked what they saw from Berrian (6-1, 185 pounds) inoffseason workouts. Coach Brad Childress praised Berrian'seagerness to immerse himself in the offense and his willingness tospend time in Florida this summer working out with quarterbackTarvaris Jackson.
"Those two are building part of their relationship that youcan't put a dollar figure on," Childress said. "He washere [nearly] every day in the offseason program, learning oursystem. You still see some clicking going on, just in terms ofroute conversions and that. I thought he was very diligent in hisapproach. Just as [wide receivers coach George Stewart] said, 'He'sa bright young man who wants to do things right.'"
Berrian's family is happy to see him get a fresh start. Well, mostly happy. Tony, a diehard Bears fan since the Super BowlShuffle days, said he supports his brother, but he couldn't resisttaking a good-natured dig at him.
"I was definitely disappointed," Tony said, half-kidding."I had to wait for him to make his decision because if I hadcalled before I would have told him he better stay with the Bears.I had to bite my tongue. He knows I'll support him ... except forthose two games."
