Japan\'s Fujitsu, Toshiba move up advanced HDD production

The firms have moved up their schedules because they now expect tosecure advanced magnetic disks in large quantities -- the keycomponent of the large-capacity HDDs, the business daily said.
By adopting the magnetic disks, for instance, DVD recorders will beable to have a storage capacity of 2 terabytes, while notebookpersonal computers will have 1-terabyte capacities -- both morethan double the amounts currently available.
Fujitsu plans to provide 2.5-inch HDDs with a 1 terabyte capacityfor makers of notebook PCs, which will incorporate advancedmagnetic disks, the report said.
Fujitsu will also consider making 2-terabyte HDDs used in DVDrecorders and other digital home appliances.
Toshiba will turn out a large number of 1.8-inch HDDs by the end of2009 that use advanced magnetic disks produced by other firms, theNikkei said.
