Unless you've been living under a rock for the last 20 years, youmust be aware of the impact that superchargers, turbochargers, andnitrous oxide-the Big Three power adders-have had on '86-to-thepresent Mustangs.
While some 'Stangbangers install the power-enhancing systems as away of giving their bone-stock Ponies more zip, other enthusiaststurn to power adders for taking highly modified, hard-core Mustangsto the next level.
Forced induction (blowers, to be specific) appears to be the powerbuilder of choice for the S197 crowd. We've seen several'05-to-present 'Stangs at shows and prowling the boulevardssporting the latest Roots-, screw-, and centrifugal-stylesuperchargers offered by all of the leading manufacturers. Today'sS197 supercharger systems are completely bolt-on. They includefuel-system components and programming updates for a 'Stang's PCMthat will allow its Three-Valve engine to operate efficiently whileunder the influence of boost.
Despite all of the benefits of adding a blower to an '05-'09Mustang, one of the nuances we've heard about more than a few timesis that supercharged S197s occasionally experience spark issuesthat can affect driveability and performance in a big way. Sparkplugs are the root of this problem.
Blower upgrades are made retaining the OEM plugs, and their highheat range and fixed gap are no match for the higher cylinderpressure and hotter temperature that a blower promotes. Whilesupercharged Three-Valves can be tuned to make great power on pumpfuel, a lot is left on the table because of the overallinefficiency of the spark plugs once boost gets at them. Stockplugs are hotter, and there's less contact area between theirceramic inserts and the metal inside the plugs, so heat remainstrapped in the ceramic.
