The SY88422L is offered in a 16-pin 3-mm x 3-mm MLF package. The ICis available in volume and pricing starts at $3.30 for 1K quantity.Micrel says it also offers a complete SFP module reference designconsisting of SY88422L, MIC3002, and the 4.25-Gbit/sec limitingpost amplifier, SY88403L.
"The release of the SY88422L Laser Diode Driver gives our customersa greater flexibility in their SFP module designs," notes Thomas S.Wong, vice president of high bandwidth products. "Not only does theSY88422L feature exceptional drive capabilities, but it is designedto easily interface with the Micrel MIC3002 microcontroller. Whencoupled with Micrel's SY88403L 4.25-Gbit/sec Limiting PostAmplifier, this provides customers with a complete, cost-effective4.25G multi-rate transceiver solution."
The SY88422L is the newest addition to Micrel's fiber-optic productline. It offers high drive current, integrated bias and low corepower consumption, making it the ideal driver for FP/DFB lasers inSFP modules, according to Micrel representatives. The driver'sintegrated bias option removes the need for external transistors, which saves board space, reduces cost, and simplifies design. TheIC is equipped with a bias monitoring output to give designers theability to track the bias current output and monitor laser agingover time. The bias current can be set by Micrel's advancedmicrocontroller, the MIC3002. The device also accepts a range ofinput signals, ranging from 100mVpp to 2400mVpp, and has internal50-Ohm terminations.
Micrel says the combination of the SY88422L and MIC3002 gives theuser unprecedented control over laser output and error diagnostics. The MIC3002 can automatically adjust the bias current of theSY88422L to compensate for temperature variations and laserdeterioration over time. This combination also allows the user toutilize various diagnostic circuitry of the MIC3002 to monitor thetransmission performance. In addition, since the MIC3002 canoperate with up to four identical memory addresses, the SY88422Land MIC3002 combination can fit seamlessly into the LX-4 modules.
