When someone suffers heat stroke, body temperature rises rapidlyand the body loses its ability to sweat, which is its naturalcooling mechanism. Individuals suffering heat stroke can registerbody temperatures of 106 degrees or higher. Heat stroke can causedeath or permanent disability if emergency treatment is notprovided.
Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that candevelop after several days of exposure to high temperatures andinadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids.
If you suspect you or someone you know is suffering from heatexhaustion or heat stroke, call 911. These conditions requireimmediate medical attention.
